(WJPF) – The National Weather Service confirms that an EF-3 tornado, with estimated peak winds of 150 miles per hour, touched down Sunday near the Johnson-Williamson county line.

According to the NWS, the tornado touched down at 6:38 p.m. north of Goreville near Newton Lane, snapping large tree limbs and damaging an out building on Pully’s Mill Lane.  It then traveled east, picking up in intensity as it crossed interstates 57 and 24.

Along Illinois Highway 37, the tornado did roof damage to two homes and snapped a few wooden power poles. Nearby trees suffered extreme damage, with debarking noted on a few trees near the intersection of Highway 37 and Orchard Lane, along with numerous large trees snapped. To the east on Orchard Lane, a home suffered a direct hit by the tornado, with the roof being removed and most of the exterior walls collapsed. A nearby outbuilding was also destroyed, along with several large snapped trees.

As the tornado approached the Eagle Point Bay subdivision on Lake of Egypt, it snapped several large trees and wooden telephone poles on Deaton Road and Greentree Drive. Two manufactured homes were severely damaged or destroyed. One resident here suffered broken bone injuries. Another house had its roof uplifted slightly and was slightly moved on its foundation.

The tornado lifted off the ground at 6:48 p.m. near the Lake of Egypt.
