A memorial service was held on the town square in Marion on Sunday to remember those who lost their lives and those injured during a tornado that the city 40 years ago.

An EF4 tornado ripped through Southern Illinois, carving a 17-mile path where it damaged and tore apart buildings and leaving many homeless.

Ten people lost their lives and 136 were injured across Williamson County during the event.

Marion Mayor Mike Absher emceed Sunday’s memorial service.
