CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – A Colorado man has been arrested in connection to a 2016 incident that ended and a Carbondale Police Officer injured.
Xavier Lewis, 30, was arrested earlier this month in Colorado on an outstanding Jackson County warrant. Lewis faces charges including aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm, conspiracy with the intent to deliver cannabis, and cannabis trafficking.
Two Kansas men connected to the shooting have already been sentenced to prison terms. Alex Karcher is serving a 27 ½ year sentence; Matthew Manley is serving a 9 year sentence, both on a number of gun and drug charges.
Authorities say on July 31, 2016 the three were collecting money from a previous drug deal when shots were fired. Carbondale Police officers patrolling the area heard the shots and saw their vehicle speed away. During a chase, police say Alex Karcher fired multiple shots at police. One of those shots hit Carbondale Officer Trey Harris in the eye. He survived.
Xavier Lewis is currently being held in a Colorado jail awaiting extradition back to Illinois.
