WOOD RIVER, Ill. (AP) — A 14-year-old boy fleeing police in a car he had allegedly stolen from a southwestern Illinois dealership died after it collided with another stolen car officers were also pursuing, police said.

The two vehicles stolen from a Wood River dealership collided early Tuesday along the southbound ramp linking Illinois 255 with Interstate 270 in the Metro East area several miles east of the Mississippi River, police said.

Wood River Police Chief Brad Wells said the 14-year-old driver of the stolen Ford Edge was ejected when it rolled over after the collision. The Madison County coroner said the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 16-year-old boy who was driving a Dodge Dart that collided with the Ford Edge suffered life-threatening injuries when it crashed into a drainage canal, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.

Illinois State Police said officers had pursued at least five cars that were driven off the lot at the Federico Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership.

Wells said officers called to the dealership after a burglar alarm sounded found a broken window and evidence of entry. He said officers then “saw multiple vehicles traveling southbound on Illinois 255 from Illinois 143 at a high rate of speed.” Police later learned that those cars were stolen.
