MARION — The Southern Illinois Miners announced Thursday that they will induct eight area high school coaches into their Southern Illinois High School Coaches Hall of Fame. The 2020 class will feature some of the most legendary coaches the area has ever seen.
On May 26th, Pinckneyville Panthers basketball coach Bob Waggoner will be the first to be inducted. Waggoner has amassed a 482-232 record in his career with eight regional titles, two sectional titles, two super-sectional titles, and a 4th place finish in 2018. Waggoner has coached 12 20-win teams, including the 2019-2020 squad, who currently stands at 20-2 on the season.
On June 9th, Carbondale Terriers wrestling coach Dennis Ragan will be inducted. Ragan has been inducted into multiple Halls, including the National Wrestling Hall of Fame this past November. Ragan coached at Carbondale for 39 years.
Others being inducted this summer include current Anna-Jonesboro football coach Brett Detering (June 30th), current Goreville girl’s basketball coach Mike Helton (July 21st), former Carterville football coach Dennis Drust (August 11th), former Cobden basketball coach Blayne Smith (August 18th), former Christopher basketball coach Tom Wheeler (August 25th), and former Murphysboro volleyball coach Mike Layne (September 1st).
