SWANSEA, Ill. (AP) – Crews have started demolishing much of a southwestern Illinois school that was damaged when a collapsed mine caused gradual sinking.

A large excavator tore into walls and roof sections of Swansea’s Wolf Branch Middle School on Monday. Video from the Belleville News-Democrat shows the roof of the school’s gymnasium being torn down, exposing a wall painted with “Home of the Warriors.”

Nearly half of the school faces demolition, including the cafeteria and music rooms. The school was closed in September 2017 after cracks appeared in the floors.

A collapsed coal mine was blamed for the damage. Crews drilled dozens of hole around the site about 20 miles east of St. Louis and filled them with grout to stabilize the ground.

School officials hope to open the rebuilt school in 2020.
