Johnston City Athletics took a hit Thursday night when both their head football and boys’ basketball coaches turned in their resignations.
Football coach Todd Thomas is stepping away from the responsibilities of the head coach job to focus more on his family but intends to remain on the staff as an assistant.
Boys’ Basketball coach Scott Burzynski is stepping away entirely.
Thomas took over his hometown’s football program in 2018 and has since led the team to a 53-19 record. The program has made four consecutive trips to the playoffs, reaching at least the second round in each trip and the semifinals twice.
The football team has five seasons in a row with winning records and won three Black Diamond conference championships under the guidance of Thomas, including this past season. Thomas has a career record of 69-39.
Burzynski came to Johnston City in 2017 after a year off following a 17-year stint at Carterville. The Indians boys’ basketball had two winning seasons under Burzynski. He put together an 89-147 record at Johnston City. Burzynski has a career record of 390-397.
