MT. VERNON, Ill. (WJPF) – A Mt. Vernon man is behind bars after police say he tried to force his way into an occupied home.

It happened around 1:40 p.m. Monday in the 11000 block of East Stone Road in Mt. Vernon.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says an occupant of the home fire a shot from a handgun, stopping Dewayne Corbett’s, 44, attempted break-in.

The sheriff’s office say further investigation showed that Dewayne Corbett tried to enter at least two other homes before the incident Monday on East Stone Road.
