WAYNE COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) – Ray Tate, the Kentucky man who pleaded guilty to the December 2021 murder of Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley and is currently serving a life sentence, now says he didn’t do it and wants a new trial.

According to recently filed court documents, Tate claims he was coerced into a confession, had inadequate legal representation, and was not mentally competent to enter a plea.

A hearing is set for June 28. Ray Tate is currently incarcerated at Menard Correctional Center in Chester.
