MT.VERNON, Ill. (WJPF) – Ray Tate, the man charged with murder in the December shooting death a Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy, is back behind bars after he tried to break out of jail.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says early Sunday morning, Tate exploited a security weakness in the construction of his jail cell. He was caught before he left jail grounds and put into a different jail cell without incident.

Tate faces a total of 38 charges in the murder of Deputy Sean Riley and the crime spree that followed in the hours after the killing.
