CAVE-IN-ROCK, Ill. (WJPF) – The Cave-In-Rock Ferry reopened for regular service Thursday, but will likely close again this weekend.

The ferry had been out of service since February 25 due to high water levels on the Ohio River.

Ferry operators say the flood water has receded enough to allow service to resume until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, however, they say the river is forecasted to rise again overnight, which will likely lead to another temporary closure Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Cave-In-Rock Ferry carries about 500 vehicles across the Ohio River in an average day. When the ferry is forced to close it turns a 10-mile trip between Cave-In-Rock and Marion, Ky into a 60-mile detour.
