FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) — Four Florida residents, two of them small children under the age of 10, were hurt in a crash Thursday in Franklin County.
Illinois State Police say the single vehicle crash happened at about 4:40 a.m. on Interstate 57 near the Route 154 exits.
A preliminary crash investigation indicates that Aundreaa McElroy, 26, was driving a Chrysler minivan southbound when she lost control and hit the west guardrail. The vehicle then traveled through the center median, passed through both northbound lanes, and hit a bridge support head-on.
Two children, ages 4 and 6, riding in the van were airlifted to a regional hospital with serious injuries. McElroy and an adult passenger were taken by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
McElroy was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash and for Failure to Properly Secure a Child.
