The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 17-year-old male, believed to be connected to a New Year’s Day home invasion.

Deputies responded just before 7 Wednesday night to the report of an armed home invasion at a residence south of Carbondale. Occupants of the dwelling told deputies that two men forced their way inside and demanded money. A struggle ensued over a gun and shots were fired.

Later, police were called to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale regarding a 17-year-old being treated there for a gunshot wound. The patient later died. Investigators believe the two incidents are related.
