One person is dead after they were hit by a train early Sunday morning in Carbondale.

Police say it happened around 4:30 Sunday morning.

The victim was walking near the East Pleasant Hill Road overpass when they were hit by a northbound freight train.

The location where they were hit is not a railroad crossing.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.

The investigation is ongoing.
