Illinois House Minority Leader Jim Durkin says he wants to establish a hotline for helping victims of sexual harassment. The republican’s legislation would aid victims in seeking counseling, protective services, or filing a sexual harassment complaint.
House Speaker Mike Madigan has already introduced legislation that would require harassment awareness training for all who work at the state capitol.
Both pieces of legislation were prompted by testimony from political activist Denise Rotheimer, that she was harassed last year by Senator Ira Silverstein.
When she questioned by her now year old complaint had seen no action, it was revealed that legislative inspector general post had been vacant for two years. It has since been filled.
